Lucerne Valley High School/Middle School principal Patricia Courtney has tendered her resignation effective June 1.

Regarded as bright, talented and a difference-maker, Courtney declined a reporter's query regarding her resignation. Courtney formally gave notice in a letter to the school district on April 26.

"I wish Lucerne Valley Unified nothing but success," she wrote.

While Courtney was quiet on her reasons for leaving, others were quick to voice appreciation for the educator.

"Mrs. Courtney came to us at a time of transition," school board member Tom Hagen said during Thursday's regular school board meeting. "Mrs. Courtney bravely stepped in. She gave a great deal of leadership and ability to that site. She gave that job everything she had."

Courtney, 34, was named the high school's acting principal in January of 2011 after previous principal Russell Munyan was placed on administrative leave following an alleged confrontation with students. Later, Courtney was named to permanently fill the position.

A native of Big Bear Lake, the statuesque Courtney utilized her athletic talents at the high school as well. Earlier this school year, she coached the girls varsity volleyball team to an Agape League Championship and has played a key role in coaching and supporting the entire Mustang athletic department.

Other educators who have recently resigned include special education teacher Tyler Warnock and middle and high school teacher David Courtney, who has accepted a social studies teaching position at Big Bear High School.
